'John Carter' Hype Machine Rumbles To Life

Maybe you didn't know, but John Carter From Mars was supposed to be the first live action & CGI film for PIXAR. In fact many supposed it would be Disney/PIXAR's answer to James Cameron's AVATAR. Then sometime last year, Disney took the reins from PIXAR and brought it in house to Walt Disney Studio's. The move was considered by many to be a bad sign for the film. However, it may simply come down to Disney's unwillingness to jeopardize the unprecedented and untarnished box-office track record of PIXAR.

There have been other oddities about Disney's handling of the film recently. At the end of last month Disney inexplicably changes the title of the film to simply John Carter. No reason was given, they just simply shortened the name. Though it could be a move to make the film seem slightly more edgy, by removing what might be perceived by the public as hokey element from old sci-fi movies. The "Mars" part of the title is slightly irrelevant to the story only in that the place that we know as Mars is referred to by the characters from the planet as Barsoom.

This falls in line with the theory that Disney is trying to anchor John Carter to Avatar, as the films tell similar stories, A human being travels to an exotic world falls in love with a Princess & her people. The films also blend live action and CGI in very similar ways. Disney is shooting the film in 3D and very much wants the world of Barsoom to have the same enveloping feel that the world of Pandora did. Also, with the title alteration, both John Carter and Avatar have three syllables. Makes the title easy to say. Rolls off the tongue.

Any way, all the John Carter talk is generated by the fact that Disney is now ready to tell the world about the film. They did so this week by releasing this teaser poster that oddly enough still bears the letters J.C.M. that represent John Carter From Mars. The poster itself doesn't reveal much but it does feature the title character as portrayed by actor Taylor Kitsch. The other thing this poster does is continue the irritating trend of movie posters plastering text of the characters face, like the THOR posters from a month ago.

In addition to the poster, MARVEL announced last week that they had made a major deal with the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs. They will be producing comic book adaptaion of all the John Carter books, beginning with John Carter: Warlord Of Mars. The five issue series will be on Comic Book Store racks in September.
