Yesterday, towards the end Of Disney's Tron:Legacy panel, Disney Studio's Boss Rich Ross introduced film maker Guillermo del Toro, not that he had anything to do with TRON, but his appearance had everything to do with what TRON has come to mean to San Diego Comic Con. Three years ago it was here that Disney shocked fans with the first test footage of what would become TRON:Legacy. So, naturally it would be here that Disney would drop another shocker on fans. A new Haunted Mansion film is coming. It has nothing to do with the Eddie Murphy film and Del Toro is going to do his best to pay tribute to Disney's classic attraction by capturing the same "Fun but Scary" feeling that the ride has delivered to park guests for over 40 years. Here is more from Del Toro, via the Hollywood Reporter.
"It's going to be a thrill ride for the whole family but it's definitely going to be scary," he said. "(Walt) Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare. We need to honor that side of the legacy."
One thing is clear, though. The new Mansion movie will have no connection to Disney's earlier attempt to turn the ride into a movie with the 2003 Eddie Murphy supernatural comedy also titled "The Haunted Mansion."
Disney hopes to stir up mass appeal by drawing on Del Toro's ability to summon up fantastic images like those he created in "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Hellboy."
"We want a scary movie that's as scary as the ride. If you're 11 years old, you can go on the ride but it's still scary," said Disney production head Sean Bailey. "Tonally we're going to make a movie that is for families but is a fun and, at times, scary movie."
And if all this was not enough Del Toro has confirmed that one of the most beloved ghosts from the history of the haunted mansion WILL be in his film. None other than the HAT BOX GHOST!!!
Specific plot details -- as well as what kind of creatures will be featured -- are being guarded as if shut in a coffin, but one ghost that will appear is the Hatbox Ghost, who is dressed in a cloak and top hat, and whose head disappears and reappears in a hatbox the ghost holds in his hand.
The two biggest nuggets to come out of Thursday's TRON:Legacy panel at Comic Con 2010, were #1) the new trailer for the film that actually illustrates #2) Not only is Jeff Bridges paying an aged Kevin Flynn, but thanks to the assistance of Computer Graphics he will portray a 30-something year old version of himself as CLU. TRON:Legacy will finally hit theaters in December.
