Even though this short video is simply a commercial for ESPN, the situation depicted in it is actually happening. Sort of. Back in February a contest to select the new mascot for the university got underway. Admiral Ackbar, The Rebel Alliance leader from the Star Wars film Return Of the Jedi garnered a lot of publicity but was met with a less than enthusiastic response from Lucasfilm that is mentioned in the commercial. The Ackbar nomination also met with a bitter backlash and has since been dismissed as an idea. However, Ole Miss is still without a mascot and it makes you wonder if a national television ad highlighting this kind of crazy but awesome idea might actually have an influence those who have so vehemently opposed the Admiral Ackbar Idea. Think about this all you Ole Miss Alumni, There are a lot of Star Wars fans out there. Many of those Star Wars fans also love football and relish the chance to root for a team they can call their own, in any way possible. More people would be watching. A Star Wars tie in with an NCAA team would be a ratings bonanza, not to mention the millions to be made on merchandise. Imagine it Ole Miss fans... Your team would be everywhere! It would be a lot easier to find Ole Miss merchandise anywhere in the country, anyway.
