Just when you think you've see it all, An article in Variety pop's up and totally shock's your idea of what is possible in the film industry. In an apparent nod to MARVEL Studio's cross title story arch that bridges several different film franchises and will culminate in the epic Avengers movie, due out 2012. Disney is planning a Magic Kingdom film that will include characters from the Pirates of The Caribbean films, as well as characters from possible Disney Parks themed films that are currently in various forms of production(Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland, and David Fincher's imminent remake of 20,000 Leauges Under The Sea.)Disney is also saying that we can expect to see iconic characters like Mickey, Donald, and Goofy and of course many many other characters that guests to the Disney parks have come to love and adore. The film is still a low priority for Disney, But Battlestar Galactica writer Ronald D. Moore, has already written a rough draft. Now, keep in mind that a project like this that will likely feature characters with long and storied legacies, Disney will move very cautiously as not to harm or misrepresent those characters in anyway. Which is to say, production on a Magic Kingdom film would take a while. .
The question is, of course, "How Do You Pull Off A Film About A Place Where Dream's Come True?" Apparently the answer is... "Copy What Works." The MARVEL strategy is actually a very shrewed one to follow, as it falls right in with Disney's long held strategy to make mega bucks from the ever profitable movie tie in. Also the logistical problem of how exactly would you get all of these characters to come to life and interact with each other, is also answered by following what has gone before. Fox's very successful Night At The Museum films provide the perfect blueprint for what a Magic Kingdom film might look like. Cameo heavy, with many familiar characters running amok in the Happiest Place On Earth. The story would focus on a small group of main characters who drive the story. All the while the magic and mayhem of Disney coming to life all around them.
Of course, many will scoff at the idea of making a film star out of the Disney theme parks. But in the end... They are missing the point. With a Magic Kingdom film Disney may have (possibly)a new film franchise, and an easy way to make some of the more dated elements & attractions of the Disney Parks more accessible to modern audiences. In one fell swoop, Disney could reboot their entire public face. Film,parks, and merchandise. Where anything with the name Disney would be a movie tie in, and a parks tie in. It would all be completely interconnected. The future of Disney is indeed headed in a bold direction with Bob Iger and Rich Ross steering the Disney dreadnought.
