As you may have heard, a portion of the Pirates Of The Caribbean ride at Disneyland has gotten an On Stranger Tides makeover to coincide with the release of the film. This last friday, the space that Davy Jones has occupied during the "Dead Men Tell No Tales" portion of the attraction, received a new occupant. Ian McShane as Blackbeard. Now, the unfortunate truth is, the sequence with Blackbeard doesn't work all that well.
It's not Ian McShanes fault. He had a really amazing turn as the feared pirate in the film, and continues that performance here. However, Blackbeard doesn't have the same supernatural weight as the Davy Jones character and there is the absence of the 'creature factor.' Or to put it bluntly, Davy Jones is just more scary fun than Blackbeard. I wouldn't mind if the two sequences were somehow interchangeable and you never know which one your going to get when you experience the ride.
Well, as luck would have it Disneyland Resort spokesman John McClintock has stated that while Blackbeard will be the star of that sequence for an undetermined amount of time. After that exclusive engagement Blackbeard will then split time with most feared man on the seven seas, Davy Jones. Savvy?
