When Disney bought MARVEL, it was stated several times that they would be using the brand across all areas of the Disney family. What that meant exactly was totally up for grabs. Since then Marvel has produced multiple comic book inspired covers for ESPN the magazine, and Disney promoted the film TRON: Legacy by "TRONifying" the covers of most of MARVEL's best selling comic book titles. It's good marketing, but sometimes good marketing can also be crafty storytelling.
As part of the story of the season three season finale, Nathon Fillion's title character Richard Castle is a super famous crime novelist who makes a deal with MARVEL comics to add Graphic novels to his list of published works. The cover of the book was actually shown in the episode. The graphic novel is actually based on Richard Castle's first successful charcter, Derrick Storm.
In the real world MARVEL is releasing the story as a hard cover graphic novel. The list of creative talent is pretty impressive too. The book was co written by Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers, Astro City) and Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain America and The Secret Avengers); interior artist Lan Medina (Fables); and cover artist Carlo Pagulayan (Planet Hulk). The book will be on comic book shelves on September 28th, 2011 and will retail for $19.95.
