BREAKING NEWS: Disney's 'The Lone Ranger' Is Dead

In an absolutely unforseen move, Disney has pulled the plug on the upcoming Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinsky, Jerry Bruckheimer project. According to a story that Deadline.com just broke within the last hour, Disney is halting the film due to an out of control budget. The film makers had been trying to reduce the budget from 250 million to a more acceptable 200 million.

Truth is, this all about Money. Tron:Legacy & Cars 2 were expensive projects that happened to be box office disappointments that didnt bring in nearly as much cash as Disney had hoped. ith big budget films like John Carter & Oz The Great And Powerful already in production and eating up a lot of money, shutting down The Lone Ranger may have been the quickest way for Disney to save a few bucks.

The screeching halt that this project has come to is disappointing to more than just the cast & crew that no longer have a job. Many New Mexico business had already been to work on the project and the loss of those Disney dollars in southern New Mexico and right here in Albuquerque will have long reaching effects on the local economies.

It is actually quite hard to believe that with guaranteed money makers like Depp & Bruckheimer on board that Disney would scrub the project. It's even harder to believe given the fact that the film makers were very deep into the pre-production process. Like we reported yesterday, extras casting had just gotten underway and production was about to shift in to fifth gear. It is still unclear weather or not the project will be restarted later on a smaller scale or if it will find new life at another studio, but for now The Lone Ranger is dead at Disney.
