One of the most surprising films of 2012 was Real Steel. We had the chance to catch the film at a special screening back in September. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but Hugh Jackman is always fun to watch... Heck, he even made the unbearable VanHelsing somewhat watchable. Still, the films trailer hadn't instilled much hope in me because it just seemed to be a bizarre mish-mash of concepts that fell somewhere between Rocky & Transformers. As it turns out, that is exactly what Real Steel is. And that's not a bad thing.
Real Steel is the story of down on his luck former boxer/promoter Charlie Kenton in a world where Boxing and MMA have given way to professional Robot Boxing. Charlie owes a lot of people a lot of money, and to be honest, he's not a likable guy. As he struggles to get back to the top of his profession, things go from bad to worse... and then he finds out he has an eleven year old son, Max. Again, Charlie isn't really a nice guy, and he essentially agrees to give full custody of the boy to his biological aunt for a large sum of money.
While still in the care of his father Max finds a discarded fighting robot named ATOM. Max absolutely believes that ATOM can be a champion, and he is right. Reluctantly, Charlie decides to train the Robot, and very quickly Charlie, Max and ATOM become a winning team. Max is so confident that ATOM is meant to be a champion that in his youthful enthusiasm he challenges the World Champion Robot Fighter to a match. Much to their surprise, the mysterious owners of that Champion robot accept the challenge. Does this underdog, junk yard fighting robot have what it takes to defeat a reigning champion?
Real Steel is a film with a crafty concept that actually turn out to have amazing heart. Both Hugh Jackman and young actor Dakota Goyo who plays Max, deliver absolutely entertaining performances and are absolutely convincing as estranged father and son. When all is said and done, Real Steel is absolutely a perfect amalgam of Rocky & Transformers. It has the heart and soul of a true underdog story like Rocky and pack a hi-tech, CGI punch like Transformers. A truly entertaining film.
