Last week's episode, "Kidnapped" ended with an ominous warning from Jedi Master Yoda, slavery has historically been a tool in the rise of the Sith. In an effort to locate the missing Togrutan colonists that mysteriously disappeared from the planet Kiros, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as Jedi's Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano secretly infiltrate the home world of the Zygerrian Slave Empire. With Ahsoka playing the part of slave and Anakin playing the part of Master, Obi-Wan and Captain Rex, stay close behind them, disguised as Zygerrians. Before they depart their ship, the Jedi entrust their lightsabers to R2-D2.
As the group make they're way through the slave market, they see several things that make them sick. Slave creatures fighting to the death, and weakened slaves being treated in horrendous ways. When a Twi'lek slave falls to the ground and a Zygerrian slaver begins to whip him, Anakin instinctively gets involved. The slaver immediately notices that he is not Zygerrian, and moves to have Anakin arrested. After a little name dropping, the disguised Jedi is immediately given an audience with the queen.
Anakin quickly wins the trust of the Zygerrian Queen, though Ahsoka has a harder time playing slave, than Anakin does playing master. The Queen invites Anakin and his slave to be her guests at the Zygerrian Slave Auction. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan and Rex are searching for any clue as to the whereabouts of the Togrutan colonists. They find the Togrutan Governor, battered and beaten in a slave pen. Unable to allow the mans suffering to continue, Obi-Wan free's the Governor, but is seen by Zygerrian security.
As Obi-Wan, The Togrutan Governor, and Captain Rex try to escape on a flying lizard, Obi-Wan is shot in the back. He and the Togrutan Governor fall to the ground and are captured. Rex, escapes but stays as close as he can to his two captured comrades. As the Zygerrian Slave Auction Begins, Obi-Wan Kenobi is presented for sale. Suspecting that Anakin and Ahsoka are also Jedi, The Queen challenges him to whip the Jedi Master to demonstrate his loyalty.
Anakin makes his way into the arena and takes the whip in hand. In a nod to Return Of The Jedi, Anakin signals to R2-D2 and his & Obi-Wan's lightsaber shot to them from across the arena. R2, then launches Ahsoka's saber towards her in the Royal observation box. Obi-Wan is weak and beaten and can only barely put up a fight, Anakin yells to Ahsoka to arrest The Queen. Unfortunately Obi-Wan is quickly subdued by Zygerrian authorities, and as Ahsoka threatens the Queen with her lightsaber, she is electrocuted by a Zygerrian slave collar, she forgot she was wearing.
Captain Rex is watching the entire situation and begins to attack the arena guards. He is almost instantly neutralized. Enraged, Anakin fights off his Zygerrian foes until he is completely overcome by their electro-whips. When Anakin regains consciousnesses, he finds himself in the Queens personal chambers. He instantly force chokes the Queen and nearly kills her, until she reminds him that his friends will die unless he cooperates.
Once again The Clone Wars crew has created a a beautiful and intricate story, but I have to say , something feels absolutely inconsistent about Anakin's emotional reaction to slavery. In 'Kidnapped' Anakin just hears the word Zygerrian and instantly smashes a holo-generator in his rage, and yet, Anakin is able to make silly 'Master & Slave' jokes as they prepare to land on Zygerria? It doesn't feel right, which leads me to believe that "Slaves Of The Republic" is pretty much a filler episode. In order have this story arc cover three episodes, they have Anakin acting in a manner that is incongruent to his personal abhorrence to slavery.
Seriously, I cannot understand how Anakin would be subdued against an idea that he hates with every fiber of his being. This is Anakin FREAKING Skywalker! You know, the guy that single-handedly butchered a tribe of Tusken Raiders, because they tortured his mother. I have a hard time believing that Anakin would have restrained himself from killing the Zygerrian Queen when he had the chance. That being said, I think that a lot of Zygerrian fools are gonna get wasted in the next episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
