DC Entertainment's New Branding Strives To Outshine MARVEL

Weather it's Coke versus Pepsi, or McDonald's versus Burger King, It seems that most industries have two powerhouse companies that are always locked in a battle for the top spot. For decades, the comic book industry has had MARVEL Comics versus DC Comics.

Over the past decade, It would seem that MARVEL has had the upper hand. In 1998 the company consolidated operations in such a way that they were able to better identify their various comic book and motion picture properties under one umbrella as MARVEL Entertainment. That move has proved monumentally successful, as MARVEL has produced several successful motion picture franchise and has expanded their comic book imprint in such a way that they currently produce several more titles that DC.

This week DC Comic's has announced their all new branding strategy. With a new logo and a new name, DC Entertainment has the industry buzzing. When the all new logo was leaked early in the week, many were saying that the logo was so pedestrian and simple that it had to be fake. However, once the official announcement was made, it became clear that the unassuming nature of the logo was totally intentional.

The simple 'peeling D' over the letter C, is actually quite clever and symbolic. The entire concept echo's the idea of secret identities. This concept is made even more evident when the logo is customized according to specific characters. Like in the above image, the 'peeling D' reveals a green glowing 'c' to represent Green Lantern, or a yellow letter 'c' with a small smattering of blood to represent The Watchmen.

DC's move is part of the companies broader plan to better market their properties across all different media. The move is also essential to DC & Warner Brothers highest priority which is to help increase their slate of film and television projects. Obviously, an effort to stay competitive with MARVEL who has had nearly a decade of successful film projects which will culminate in the mother of all comic book movies, MARVEL & Disney's The Avengers. Which is due out on may 4th.

DC Entertainment's all new logo will roll out on comic book covers in March. The all new logo will first appear on film in front of The Dark Knight Rises due out on July 20, 2012.
