VIDEO MADNESS: Muppet Music Madness

During the 84th annual Academy Awards, The Muppets succeeded in doing something they have never been able to do. Win an Oscar. That's right. Since 1979's The Muppet Movie, our favorite bunch of misfits have been trying to secure an ever elusive Best Song Award and have never managed to do it, until now.

In 1979 The song Rainbow Connection was nominated for best song, and while the song is a bona fide classic, it lost the Oscar that year to It Goes Like It Goes from the film Norma Rae.

In 1981 the Muppets had another chance to snatch a Best Song Oscar with The First Time It Happens, a major production piece from the film The Great Muppet Caper. While it may have been considered Oscar worthy in 1981, it is a song that has not withstood the test of time.

And finally, the winner Man Or A Muppet. Songwriter Bret McKenzie has written a tender and humorous ballad that addresses the inner identity crisis inside the films protagonists Walt, and Gary. While McKenzie is understandably excited about this monumental achievement he is also entirely realistic about his songs place in relation to it's legendary predecessors;

"It's an honor to get this because 'Rainbow Connection' didn't win an Oscar, but there's no doubt that that song is, you know, an absolute, timeless classic, and this is nothing in comparison," - Bret McKenzie
