'The Avengers' Returns To Theaters This Weekend

Earlier in the summer, rumors were rampant that The Avengers would return to theaters in an all new extended edition that was to debut in mid August. Of course, the rumors fizzled out and the mid-August time frame came and went. Now, Disney has suddenly announced that The Avengers are, in fact, returning to the big screen for the Labor Day holiday.

As far as we can tell, this re-release is NOT an extended version of the film. It appears that Disney & MARVEL are using this opportunity to accomplish two separate tasks. The first being, The Avengers DVD & Blu-ray release on September 25th and the films return to theaters is likely to re-energize fans and heighten expectations for the home video release. Secondly, Disney is very aware that the film is very close to overtaking James Cameron's TITANIC as the second highest grossing film of all time. A record they are surely eager to secure as Phase 2 of the MARVEL cinematic universe kicks off next summer with IRON MAN 3.

And speaking of the future of the MARVEL Universe... Now that we know about THOR: The Dark World, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Guardians Of The Galaxy, it will be interesting to view The Avengers with the future in mind. What impact will Thanos (Big purple guy who showed up in The Avengers after credit sequence) have in future MARVEL films and what chance is there of the late Agent Coulson(Clark Gregg) returning either in Avengers 2 or another future MARVEL film?
