MARVEL's Agent Coulson Returns In ABC's Upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show

It's October and MARVEL's The Avengers came out way back in May. So, the following shouldn't be a spoiler. 2/3 of the way through Avengers, Agent Phil Coulson dies. The character who was largely the glue of MARVEL's 'Phase 1' films was portrayed by actor Clark Gregg and was stabbed in the back by the coward Loki! However, even with his graphic and quite obvious demise... Fans have held out hope that he would return from the grave.

The week after Avengers was released, rumors began to circulate that Coulson would return as the android Vision in Avengers 2. Additional rumors included that he might return as Drax or Star Lord in Gaurdians of the Galaxy or that Coulson's demise was in fact faked... and that Loki killed a Life Model Decoy. Anythings possible in a comic book movie. That, and the fact that there are numerous hints in Avengers that suggest that Coulsons demise may not be what it appears.

However, it seems that Coulsons return will not occur on the big screen... but the small screen! Avengers director Joss Whedon has been developing a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV pilot for the ABC Network... and the rumors surrounding the show have been swirling since it was first announced. But no one saw this coming. On Friday New York Comic Con, Whedon announced via a pre-taped video that Coulson would in fact be in the pilot.

Now, the rumor mill is in overdrive. Fans are wondering... and rightly so, if S.H.I.E.L.D will be a prequel or if, as Whedon promised, the show will have a significant impact on the continuity of the films... and use the opportunity to reintroduce Agent Coulson to the MARVEL Cinematic Universe. Time will tell, as this is a constantly developing story...
