When it comes to Disney, one of the things you need to consider is if you should stay at one of the Disney Hotels or if you should stay at another hotel. Both have positives and negatives, and you should consider them all before booking a stay.

Disneyland Hotels
Having stayed at all three Disney Hotels, I have to say it is nice to stay within the magic. The Disney hotels are a short walking distance from both parks, but they cost a lot. The best thing about Disneyland is the hotels within walking distance to the parks. You really don’t lose much by booking one of them, and you can still be within walking distance. I really recommend stayed at the Howard Johnson. You will find that parking is free, it is within walking distance to the parks, free internet is included, and the prices are amazing.

Disney World Hotels
Now, while staying offsite is easy at Disneyland I would generally stay onsite when going to Disney World. With many levels of hotels you can stay at a value resort at a low cost and this can come with many perks which can help you save over a hotel which can cost less.
When booking, check to see when free Dining is. If you are traveling to the parks during this time and you stay at a Disney World Hotel you can get the meal plan for free, and then you can even upgrade it if you want.
Transportation from the Airport to the hotel, all around Disney World, and then from the hotel to the airport is free. When you are a large family like mine this is a good savings over renting a car. I also like to head to the room midday to take a break. This can be nice when it is a short bus or monorail ride away.
The next perk of staying onsite is the extra magic hours. This gets you extra magic hours in the mornings and the evenings at the parks daily. This is a nice time to get those busy rides done or at least one more time. I know we head to the Magic Kingdom to do these every trip just so we can get in the rides that get huge lines like Peter Pan.
There are many other perks to staying onsite like the refillable soda cups (we save money by getting soda less in the parks due to these), getting a package which includes park tickets, and being able to take a bus to the hotel at the end of the night after a fun packed day.
Now, I have stayed at a Value, a Moderate, and a Deluxe resort and have to say that staying onsite and being a Disney Vacation Club member has spoiled me. It is nice to be able to stay somewhere that is so close to the parks that I walk there in the morning and take the monorail in the evening. In the end, make sure you pick a hotel that appeals to your family and then just having a magical time.
