While at the moment this is still an unconfirmed rumor, TRON fans finally have something to be excited about. Though Disney has yet to make an official announcement, most major entertainment news sources are reporting that TRON 3 will begin filming in Vancouver beginning on October 5th, based on a report from Vancouver news blog VANCITYBUZZ.
In addition to the production start date, other sources have been able to confirm that Joseph Kosinski will return to direct and actor Garret Hedlund will reprise his role as Sam Flynn. No other details have been revealed, but are sure to come with an official announcement from Disney.
TRON 3 wasn't always a forgone conclusion. The TRON franchise has always been less than stable. The original 1982 film was a box office flop, but eventually became a cult classic and was instrumental in inspiring the future of digital animation in film. The sequel TRON: Legacy was made 28 years later and was a moderate success but not a blockbuster by any stretch of the imagination.
In 2012 Disney XD aired an animated sequel/prequel series TRON: Uprising which detailed the story between TRON and TRON: Legacy. The show was launched with great fanfare but was eventually cancelled in January of 2013 due to low ratings. However, Disney must seem to believe that there is still a chance at success for the franchise if their moving forward with a third movie.
