Yes, that is the title of the 4th Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which was announced by Jack Sparrow himself on the D23 stage. As soon as that story broke there was all kinds of speculation as to what it meant. Well, me hearty's, I have some new's that will shiver ye timbers...or something like that. According to the research I have been doing, Pirates 4 will actually be an adaptation of "On Stranger Tides" a 1988 historical fantasy novel written by Tim Powers. I found this little bit of information on Wikipedia that seems to indicate that Jerry Bruckheimer and company plan to meld the two worlds together:
On September 11, 2009, Disney announced that in the summer of 2011, the fourth installment of the wildly popular Pirates of the Caribbean series would be entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The announcement has fueled speculation that the movie will follow the plot of the novel, with Jack Sparrow replacing Jack Shandy as the story's protagonist,[4] especially as Powers sold the film rights for the novel to Disney "on the proviso that he got to be an extra in the movie." Even British entertainment magazine Empire is convinced that this is the course that Disney be setting for the Pirates franchise:Pirates 4 is a far more enticing prospect that we might previously have thought, because On Stranger Tides is a very excellent, Locus Award-winning novel by Tim Powers, so we're guessing that its plot is being twisted to fit the Pirates franchise. First published in 1988, the novel's protagonist is the puppeteer turned accountant John Chandagnac, later aka Jack Shandy, who while on a trip to confront his nefarious uncle about some dodgy family business, is waylaid by pirates and ultimately ends up captaining the crew.
There is a lot of information floating out there on the internet to support the rumors. But so far EMPIRE is the first "big" publication to indicate this. As far as I can tell people who are familiar with both are excited that Pirates will be encorporating this beloved piece of literature. So much so that if this isn't the course that Disney be plotting, there are sure to be some angry scalawags come the release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." So now that I have shoved all that information down yer gullet, here is the official summary of Tim Powers book "On Stranger Tides":
"Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father's inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner--and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands. The legendary Blackbeard is assembling a ruthless navy of pirates living and undead to voyage to the fabled Fountain of Youth, and Jack Shandy must use magic, swordsmanship, and even his puppeteer skills to free himself and the girl he has fallen in love with from Blackbeard's deadly supernatural domination."
Now, after all this information I am gonna run out to my local Library and pick this book up, but if you want to buy it you can find it here on Amazon.com. The fact that Blackbeard is the villain of the book is not at all a shock to me because ever since the rumors of Pirates 4 started, Blackbeard was always mentioned as the likely villain. I have to wonder though; Did Dreamworks upcoming "Blackbeard" biopic influence Disney's decision to base the next PotC chapter on Powers book?
One final note to end this Pirate brouhaha, Did you know you could reset your language on Facebook from English(US) to English(Pirate)? Yep just go all the way down to the bottom of yer scurvy Facebook home page and in the bottom left corner it will say English(US) in blue letters, click that and it will take you to the language menu, and you can change it from there. I use it and the feature does take some time to get used to, but it's just a fun thing to do, especially when you consider that International Talk like a Pirate Day is on September 19th!
