Director Kevin Smith Wants To See Joe Johnston's Boba Fett Movie Get Made

Director Kevin Smith has always been pretty honest about how things work in Hollywood. Though he may get more accolades from fans than from critics or the Hollywood elite, that is just the way he likes it. In recent years he has really seemed to relish his role as the most influential FAN in the movie business. A fact made evident by the release of his latest film Red State, in which he completely abandoned the standard Hollywood release protocols in favor of touring the film. He took the film directly to the fans. He put it in front of the audiences who most wanted to see it, and gave them the added bonus of seeing the film in the presence of the film maker. He also made a killing doing it.

Now Hollywoods advocate to the fans is at it again. In an interview with Moniefone, Smith was asked what he thought of Joe Johnston's(Captain America: The First Avenger/Rocketeer) attempt to make a stand alone Boba Fett movie. Smith began to gush like a fanboy. "I think that's a brilliant idea...What a lot of people who aren't film nerds don't know is that Joe Johnston is responsible for my entire childhood [expletive] memory. The palette, the colors, the look of my childhood – he built the Boba Fett amour! He took Ralph McQuarrie design and he made them practical. He's the man responsible for the snow walker. He's the man responsible for the X-Wing. He's in essence a cinematic Santa Claus."

Smith may also provided George Lucas with a clue of how he can gain back the trust of his audience who is becoming more and more enraged by his constant and recent revisions to scenes and events in the Star Wars Saga Blu-ray. "There's easy money to be made and, plus, you'll make your audience happy. Listen to what they're saying. For years we are all like, "We love Boba Fett! We don't know why, but we like him. He doesn't do much, but we like him. He's like the Kevin Smith of 'The Empire Strikes Back' universe." I just think we like the look of him, a man of mystery. I don't know, but it could totally [expletive] work. And why George Lucas wouldn't green light that? That's just printing money."

While Smith does make a solid case for the film and the Johnston's qualifications, the real question is, would George Lucas ever let Joe Johnston get this film made? "...Give it to him! Why the [expletive] not?! In a world where they're doing 'The Clone Wars,' in a world where they are talking about doing a TV show... There's no good reason not to let Joe Johnston make a Boba Fett movie."
