Mattel wanted Disney's help to promote an all new line of Toy Story, space themed toys. Unfortunately, the last Toy Story film was two years ago, and the cost of digitally animating and hiring voice talent for a new commercial would be very costly. What to do? Animate the toys in a stop motion short film about a child playing with the new toys. The result? An unlikely piece of Disney gold that is actually a lot of fun to watch. Think of it as a reverse Cars 2. Instead of a toy commercial masquerading as an animated film, Toy Story: Space Mission is actually a pretty good animated short masquerading as a toy commercial.
