If there has been a unifying theme to season four, it is best expressed as a season about the things that lie beneath the surface. The first four episodes took place primarily under water. In this week's episode Mercy Mission, we rise from the waters and travel to the planet of Alee where an important story line takes place under the surface of the planet. This week's episode is also different from the previous four in more significant ways too. The only Jedi we see is a hologram of Yoda, and we never hear the hum of a lightsaber. Why? Because this story focuses primarily on C-3PO & R2-D2.
Fans of the vintage Star Wars cartoon Droids will feel right at home in this episode. Our favorite droids find themselves surrounded by pushy, and mostly bad tempered Clones, and a wacky native populace that seems to be more preoccupied by what might be underground than by the carnage and chaos caused on the surface by sudden and violent earthquakes. Predictably, C-3PO finds a way (once again) to get himself (and R2-D2) in to a dangerous situation.
These two bots discover a truly surprising secret that could spell the end for the surface dwelling peoples of Aleen. Not to worry though. Our droids will find a way to save the day... Okay well, maybe R2-D2 will save the day, while C-3PO frets and worries. While fans who prefer the high octane battle episodes might complain, those of us who are from the first generation of Star Wars fandom will revel in the nostalgia of the technically lacking but, retroactively awesome Droids cartoon series. A slightly under stated, but totally awesome episode. The best part? R2-D2 & C-3PO's strange journey isn't over yet! Here is a sneak peek of next week's episode Nomad Droids...
C-3PO and R2-D2's bizarre caper continues. Forced to escape a Separatist attack in a Y-wing fighter, the droids visit the world of the Patitites, the odd planet Balnab, and the inside of a pirate warship where they are forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena.
