This weeks all new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has a very vintage Star Wars feel to it for a very specific reason! Just like last week's episode Mercy Mission, Nomad Droids centers specifically on everyone's favorite droids, R2D2 & C3PO. As we stated last week the entire vibe of these story lines feel VERY much like the 1980's Star Wars cartoon series that featured this hapless duo called Droid's. This week that vibe was taken to the nth degree as their adventures begin to actually feel reminiscent of old Droid's story lines.
In the beginning of the episode R2 & 3PO find themselves in grave danger as the Republic Cruiser they are on board is attacked by Separatist ships and eventually destroyed. They escape the raging inferno in a Y Wing fighter and R2 begins to have delusions that he can hold his own as a fighter pilot. Their ship is damaged and crash lands on an uncharted planet.
Without divulging too many of the specific details, the remainder of the episode finds our unlikely heroes in a position to depose not one, but two tyrannical leaders. Then the pair finds themselves in the hands of cut throat pirates who force them into a deadly encounter inside a droid gladiator arena! Will this plucky pair find a way to safety or is this the bitter end for these Nomad Droids?
It is actually quite humorous that Dave Filoni and crew are paying homage to a television show that, even in it's day, was really quite lackluster. The funniest element, however, is that by honoring that show in such a stylish and cool way, they have retroactively made the Droid's show look like better source material than it actually is. They have also single-handedly remind us that while Clone Wars may have it's problems(fewer now than in the first two seasons) it is a thousand times better than ANYTHING Star Wars fans had in the '80's and early '90's.
