What if, Walt Disney's First Live Action Film were utterly forgotten? What if, a classic film that garnered the first acting Oscar for an African American man were totally forgotten? What if, a world famous park attraction were based on a film that had been completely forgotten? What if these were all the same film? They are. In November 1946, Walt Disney Studio's release Song Of The South. The film was a box office hit making nearly 70 Million dollars.
However, as time passed, and society changed, elements of the story became more dated and seemed to indicate a level of racial insensitivity that was never intended. In 1986 the film was re-released to theaters in the United States and Europe, however, this would be the very last time Song Of The South would be released from the 'Disney Vault.' For nearly 25 years Song Of the South has been quietly hidden away and all evidence seems to indicate that Disney has every intention of leaving it there.
Thankfully, Disney has adopted an uncommon attitude towards the distribution of this film. For the most part, Song of the South is readily available online. You can purchase pirated DVD's of the film from Ebay or other outlets, and Disney won't object at all. You can also head on over to YouTube and find the film in it's entirety, broken up into multiple parts.
Since Disney has obviously dis-owned this important part of their own history, it falls to the fans to celebrate the 65th birthday of this beloved film.
