On January 1st, Disney Parks announced a bi-coastal event in which both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom park in Walt Disney World would be open for 24 hours on 'leap day,' February 29th, 2012. Over the course of the last two months Disney teased new and exciting details about the event. Especially, in regards to Disneyland. The Disney Parks Blog had even announced a special event, a "Midnight Snack" that promised to be the ultimate pit stop for Disney fans on their 24 hour excursion to the park. The day was filled with magic, merriment and a lot of surprises. Sure, there were a few headaches along the way, but nothing powerful to diminish the fun and excitement of the day. Anyway, we are getting a head of ourselves. Let us start at the beginning.

The day began for us at about 4am. As we approached the main gate at the Disneyland Resort, we saw that the line to get in was... in a word, MASSIVE. According to cast members, the line to get in the park was already about 3,500 strong at that point. At about 5am, Mickey Mouse and the Disneyland Band came out to entertain the folks who were the very first in line. Finally, at 6am Disneyland opened, and that was a strangely organized and calm event. It seemed obvious that Disneyland's pre-planning was paying off.
As we entered the park, we were greeted by an unbelievably cool sight. Disneyland cast members, from seemingly every department, lined Main Street USA. and all of them had on a Mickey Mouse glove. The cast members laughed and high-fived guests as they passed. The awesomeness of this gesture was not lost on the guests. This was an awesome way to start your day at Disneyland. Guests who entered into Frontierland and New Orleans Square between 6 and 7am were treated to a rather cool surprise. The ABC Television sitcom Modern Family was filming an episode on location at the park. The entire cast was on hand, including Sofia Vergara, who is just as gorgeous in person as she is on TV. The only member of the ensemble cast who didn't seem to be on hand was actor Ty Burrell who plays fan favorite Phil Dunphy.
After the excitement of the Modern Family shoot had largely subsided, the day proceeded much like a normal day at Disneyland... up to a point. During the daylight hours the park was busy, but not insanely so. Thus, park guests were free to enjoy all the special perk that Disney was offering, including some amazing, one time only food treats that were available at eatery's across the park.

We were fortunate enough to sample the Chorizo and Egg breakfast pizza at Pizza Port in Tomorrowland that was pretty awesome, and is very similar to the Chorizo breakfast burrito offered at Tomorrowland Terrace. We were also excited to try the Green Chile Cheese Blu Corn Tamale plate. Which was AWESOME. The was a full slice of green chile in the middle of each tamale which is reminiscent of a traditional Mexican dish called a Chile Relleno. All in all it was an outstanding meal.

This saga is by no means finished! Stay tuned for our experience at the Disney Parks Blog "Midnight Snack," Some of the odd headaches that guests encountered, and we rounded out the last few ours of our 24 hour excursion to Disneyland!
