Speculation, and rumors have been circulating for weeks, but now it has officially been confirmed. The director of X-Men 1&2 and the Producer of X-Men: First Class, Bryan Singer was asked in an interview with IGN about the status of the new X-Men movie, and he confirmed most if not all of the rumors.
In the interview(video below), Singer explains that the upcoming sequel to 2011's X-Men: First Class will be title X-Men: Days Of Future Past and will lean heavily on the 1981 X-Men comic book story line that appears in Uncanny X-Men # 141 & #142. The story involves an alternate dystopian future in which all mutants are in internment camps and giant Sentinels rule over North America. Kitty Pride from this reality returns(presumably) to the First Class time line and warns the X-Men of their impending doom. Days of Future Past is widely considered one of, if not the greatest X-Men story ever written.
More interesting though is his insinuation that this film will attempt to connect the dots between the somewhat disconnected series of previous X-Men films. Singer specifically acknowledges the massive success of MARVEL's Cinematic Universe, and suggests that that FOX's X-Men Franchise has the ability to produce a cinematic universe just as vast and entertaining as the film series that culminated with this summers The Avengers. In fact, FOX & MARVEL are currently moving forward on yet another X-Men related film, The Wolverine which will hopefully benefit from having all of the 'X-continuity' ironed out.
