In the past year, Disney's production of The Lone Ranger has had it's share of 'bad.' Bad press, bad luck, bad omens...bad everything. Heck, last week the production got in to a little bit of trouble with the U.S. Bureau Of Land Management in Moab, Utah. It turns out an over enthusiastic member of BLM had sought to deny the film the chance to alter their permit due to the danger the change would cause to a fragile desert ecosystem, that isn't even technically endangered or in harms way. Fortunately that situation was resolved and production moved on.
This week, two confidential sources shared with us their experiences on the Albuquerque set of The Lone Ranger. The set is a complete re-creation of an old time western town and, for now, is situated just west of the city very near the Rio Puerco. According to both sources, filming at this location finally wrapped on Thursday August 16th, with the entire set being scheduled for demolition this week.
Both sources shared with us a very cool story about actor Armie Hammer who plays the titular character. Evidently, Hammer was far more interested in his dirt bike and riding around the arid desert landscape than concerning himself with his next shot. Our sources said Hammer was in full Lone Ranger costume and was thoroughly enjoying himself as he tore through sand, mud and weeds on his motor bike.
As filming finally wrapped, many members of the cast and crew stood around Armie Hammer, who was still in costume and back on his dirt bike. Good byes and well wishes were exchanged. During this moment of heart felt finality, Mr. Hammer pulled a couple of prop bullets out of the Lone Rangers iconic gun belt and tossed them to a select few members of the crowd around him. He rode his bike out of the group, then he pulled the front of the dirt bike up in a 'wheelie' and exclaimed "HiHo Silver, Away!" And then, he literally rode off into the sunset.
New Mexico filming for Lone Ranger moves up north to Angel Fire this week, and wraps up soon in Moab, Utah. The Lone Ranger will be in theaters next summer, July 3rd 2013.
