When it comes official animated STAR WARS projects, the history is... pretty dismal. The first ever STAR WARS animated short was attached to the much maligned 1978 STAR WARS Holiday Special and while it isn't a shining example of late 1970's hand drawn animation... by a long shot. It does happen to be the very first appearance of Boba Fett a full two years before he would appear in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.
Then there was the short lived DROIDS animated series. Which actually did a solid job of expanding the STAR WARS universe through the eyes of everybody's favorite droids, C3PO & R2D2. However, even in the mid-1980's the shows quality of animation was sub par and hasn't held up well over the years. Simultaneously there was the EWOKS animated series, but that show had next to nothing to do with the larger STAR WARS universe as a whole.
Fast forward to 2003 when CARTOON NETWORK breathed some much needed life into STAR WARS animation with two seasons of THE CLONE WARS animated shorts that combine for two WICKEDLY AWESOME animated films. The natural progression from that show was the 2008 digitally animated film and subsequent television show of the same name that just kicked off it's fifth season this last saturday.
Now, having said that we have come across something that is one of... If not THE best two minutes of unofficial, animated STAR WARS we have ever seen. This untitled STAR WARS short film is rendered in an anime style that is slick, smooth, and full of action. YouTube user OtaKing77077 animated the short film and posted it online with no music or sound effects. Then another YouTube user, JPL4185 found this video and carefully added both film accurate sound effects and an amazing song from the original STAR WARS: The Old Republic video game. This is quite simply one of the best STAR WARS fan films we have ever seen. Period.
