All over the world, in cinema's, comic book shops, and coffee houses, Joss Whedon's name is mentioned in soft and reverent tones. The man who made a legend out of Buffy, put cowboys in space with Firefly, and made a musical about super villain Dr. Horrible, is now the evil genius who is quietly pulling some very heavy strings behind the scenes at MARVEL Studio's.
Whedon's success has now provided him with a lot of opportunities behind the scenes at MARVEL. As we reported a couple weeks ago, Whedon has signed on to direct Avengers 2, which is still a couple years away but in the short term MARVEL fans are more focused on his return to TV.
S.H.I.E.L.D. is a TV pilot currently being developed by Whedon for the ABC Television Nework. The series will take place in the same universe as the MARVEL films, but will focus more on the human agents of the organization headed by Nick Fury, rather than the superheroes. Yesterday TV Line.com published four cast listings that give us a better idea of who the new characters are in SHIELD!
Skye – This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.
Agent Grant Ward – Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.
Agent Althea Rice – Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.
Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons – These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.
This TV pilot is still very early in pre-production. We will have further details on the show as they are released.
