Look, it is a known fact that desperation can, and has had an enormous effect on creative en devours. Evidently, this is the case for Dark Horse Comics and their STAR WARS titles. It is well known that Disney intends to award the STAR WARS comic book rights to MARVEL in 2014, so Dark Horse has literally thrown everything they have into every title that takes place in that galaxy far, far away. In this new series, they have employed the masterful writing of MARVEL wunderkind Brian Wood, and the exciting art work of Carlos D'Anda. Not to mention the fact that the first four issues featured covers by comic book master artist Alex Ross... And in case you didn't know, it is totally paying off.
In Issue #5 we find that Princess Leia's top secret scouting mission to find a hidden base for the displaced rebel alliance is no longer top secret. She and her squadron are suddenly ambushed by the Empire! Lucky for her and the squadron, Luke Skywalker is too arrogant and foolhardy to follow orders. Or is there more to his 'FORCEful' spirit?
Issue #5 is, without a doubt, a page turner. Once again you will find yourself pushing through this one in no time flat, and then returning to the beginning to start it all over again. Brian Wood has completely captured the original trilogy characters in all of their complexity that made us fall in love with them in 1977's STAR WARS... you know, before it was called Episode IV: A New Hope. Carlos D'Anda's art is visually stunning in such away that it draws you into a world you do not ever want to leave. As well, his images hearken back to the MARVEL comics STAR WARS series of the late '70's and early 1980's in the best possible way. RUN, do not walk to your local comic book retailer to pick up this series, or you can buy the entire series from Dark Horse comics in digital or print.
