During last night's 87th Annual Academy Awards Celebration, BIG HERO 6 won Beast Animated Feature. While this is definitely a win for Disney Animation let us not overlook the truth of the matter. The truth being that this is the very first Oscar for MARVEL. Ever. A fact that should not be overlooked or downplayed.
In 2009 when Disney acquired MARVEL the move was viewed by observers as risky, but having a lot of potential upside... For Disney. But six years later we now see that the move has put MARVEL Studios in places that they may never have been able to arrive at on their own. Sure, there was some inter-company squabbling during the production of BH6 but the results speak for themselves.
Big Hero 6 was just a quirky, 'c list' comic book team that has now quietly evolved into something huge. Now it's an animated cash cow that brought in over half a billion dollars in global box office take, and now sits a top the competition as the Best Animated Feature of 2015. And, it isn't over yet.
Big Hero 6 officially hits the home entertainment market tomorrow with a massive BluRay and DVD release that is sure to smash some records of it's own. This being the case, and Disney being a company that never misses an opportunity to cash in on it's own success (can you say FROZEN?), Big Hero 6's windfall is likely to be the catalyst for a franchise of BH6 films as well as a bevy of future MARVEL animated features.
