The Children Of Disney's Villains Come Into Their Own In Disney Channels DESCENDANTS

One thing that has always bothered me about the Disney Channel is that they never seem to do much with classic Disney properties on their flagship channel. The network has become a haven for corny, kid friendly sitcoms like Hannah Montana, Jessie and Lab Rats. Sure, I have a secret affinity for the truly goofy Pair Of Kings, but my own guilty pleasure aside they have still locked themselves into a niche.

Even with their made for TV movies like High School Musical, Camp Rock, and the Teen Beach movies they seem to have locked themselves into a very specific class of kid friendly fare. Aside from the truly special Lemonade Mouth that came out in 2011, as a fan and a parent I have always been left wanting a little more from the Disney Channel. 

Having said all that, the new trailer for Disney Channel's Descendants fills me with a little hope. Sure it does seem like another entry in the revisionist fairy tale genre that is typified by ABC's Once Upon A Time and recent films like Maleficent and Cinderella but the trailer seems to have a little something that has been missing from recent Disney Channel offerings. Magic. 

Sure the film is a send up of the typical Disney Channel teen comedy, but it seems to poke a little fun at that genre and draws specifically from Disney's iconic villains. Which is enough for me to be fairly enthusiastic when my daughters ask me to watch it with them. Disney's Descendants premiers later this year. 

Plot Synopsis From Disney Channel Disney’s Descendants takes place in a present-day idyllic kingdom, where the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic Beauty and the Beast) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making spawn of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters. These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power, or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?
