It never ceases to amaze me how the Disney fan community comes together. Fellow Disney fans have always been eager to help, always friendly. It's really a rare and beautiful thing. When the news first broke about the tragic Monorail accident at Walt Disney World, the fan reaction was one of horror and sadness. On Twitter the Disney fan community was consumed by the news and everyone was very heartbroken for the Cast Member who lost his life. Almost immediately we wanted to get involved. But what to do? What could Disney fans do to honor a lost member of the extended Disney family? It was DisneyFrakness that came up with a simple idea to honor fallen WDW Cast Member Austin Wuennenberg. In an effort to get Austin's name in the "Trending topics" list on Twitter DisneyFrankness has urged that we all add #Austin to all of our "tweets." Why the "Trending topics" list? Most people hear a lot of different things in the course of a day. We all become very busy with our lives and everything that goes on around us. Most people will only hear that there was a fatality at Walt Disney World. And that will be it, life will move on and the tragedy will go away. But for reason's that I can't explain, people who frequent Twitter pay attention to that "Trending topics" box. I know I do. I found out about the uprising in Iran through the "Trending topics" list. It's how I found out Michael Jackson died, and it's how I heard the news that Sarah Palin was resigning as governor of Alaska. When you see those one or two little words on that list you want to know what they mean. Which will usually lead you to Google or Yahoo! to find out more behind that topic. THAT is the hope and the reason behind #Austin. That if people see #Austin, they will wonder what it means and they will search out the truth, and they will find out that there is so much more to this story. They will find out that the driver of Monorail purple was Austin Wuennenberg, he was 21 years old. He had worked at Disney World for 3 years, and driving the Monorail was his dream job. And if people stop and take the time to consider Austin's life maybe they will slow down just long enough to take stock of their own lives and perhaps they will understand what a precious blessing every moment of this life is and how quickly it can all go away.
