In case you didn't notice, there are a ton of animated holiday specials. So many in fact, that it is difficult for any one of them to really stand out. Now, if you have the name "Disney" connected, it helps. Maybe, if your show were produced by the same studio that produced such computer animated fare as "Chicken Little" and "Meet the Robinson's," then you might have a chance to stand out. Another thing that helps, although it wouldn't seem like it, is to have your show pre-empted by a presidential speech, and thus have it bumped back a week. Which gives you an additional seven days to advertise and generate even more buzz for your show. Well, now that it has finally had its shot at "prime time" the question remains, Does Disney's "Prep & Landing" really stand out among the throng of animated holiday specials? The answer is, a resounding... Yes. Is it an instant holiday classic? Maybe.
Disney's "Prep & Landing" tells the story of Wayne. A highly trained Elf who is one of an elite strike force who prepare each home for the arrival of the Big Guy... Santa Clause. The show is visually stunning and is big on style. This animation is like...WOW!!! It totally BLOWS AWAY anything else that is on T.V. But, It's Disney. So, of course it does. The story, from veteran Disney writers Robert L. Baird and Daniel Gerson is actually quite good and even delivers a very strong moral lesson that doesn't come off as ambiguous or phony. The show feels like more of an animated feature than it does a half hour special. With so much visual appeal, strong writing, and fun, family friendly holiday humor "Prep & Landing" is most assuredly worth the hype and the wait. If you missed last nights premiere, not to worry. Gather you family around the flat screen and watch Disney's "Prep & Landing" on ABC Family at 7 pm ET/PT December 18th. Of course, if you want to watch it in silence without the yelling kids and assorted family members chatting it up during the show, You can click on the player above and watch it RIGHT NOW... After I wrote this review, I began to wonder if the lead character in "Prep & Landing," was named for late Disney Legend, Wayne Allwine. Who passed away on may 18th 2009. At first I just assumed it was a mere coincidence, until I remembered the cameo of Mickey Mouse about half way through the show. Wayne the elf was watching "Mickey's Christmas Carol" in which Wayne Allwine provided the voice for Mickey Mouse. Still could be a coincidence, but I somehow doubt it.
