For a lot of the hard core Star Wars fans, the prospect of seeing Star Wars Episode I rendered in 3D is about as exciting as seeing the 1984 made for TV movie, The Ewok Adventure in rendered in 3D. Sure they are both movies set in the Star Wars universe, but neither is a likely candidate for the 3D treatment. All in all, It seems like a lot of trouble for a film that is almost universally looked down upon. The hard core fans would much rather see the original trilogy film's rendered in 3D instead of the prequels, but that's almost exactly why Lucasfilm isn't releasing them first.
Think of it as marketing extortion. EVERYBODY knows that the hard core fan base has no real interest in the Prequel Trilogy in 3D, but Lucas and company have to find a way to make the less popular films profitable. The idea is simple. Casual fans will likely flock to theaters to see the film in 3D, but the Star Wars faithful have to realize that they must support the 3D release of Phantom Menace, and the subsequent prequels if they REALLY want to see the original trilogy in 3D. If the February 10, 2012 release of Phantom Menace isn't successful enough to cover the cost of the 3D conversion then it is highly unlikely that Lucasfilm would move forward with future 3D conversions.
However, given the monstrous success of the 3D re-release of Disney's The Lion King, the 3D winds are certainly blowing in the films favor. This first trailer for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace debuted in theaters on Friday. If you want to see it in 3D, it is playing before The Three Musketeers 3D, at theaters now.

The idea of seeing the original trilogy in 3D is exactly what will keep me away from the theater for this one. I just can't support Jabba's greed. I don't see what, other than the gimmick of 3D, this is accomplishing. He's tweaking my love of Star Wars away, quite frankly.
