Pirates Of The Caribbean, the classic Disneyland attraction, has delighted park guests since 1967. Over the past five years, the ride has been infused with elements from the live action movie series staring Johnny Depp. Captain Jack Sparrow, Hector Barbosa, and Davy Jones were added to the ride in 2006. Blackbeard, the villain portrayed by Ian McShane, in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was added to the ride just this past summer.
The Pirates attraction began a three month refurbishment in September. Ever since, rumors have persisted that there would be a major addition to the ride when it reopens on November 23rd. The rumor that had gained the most traction was that the beautiful but vicious Mermaids of White Cap Bay would soon be swimming in the waters of the Disneyland attraction. The rumor had been heavily repeated on Twitter and other social media sites. In fact, it was repeated so much that many had accepted it as truth. However, there isn't an ounce of truth to it.
"No Mermaids, It's just a rumor." Erin Glover, Manager Of Social Media & Print for Disneyland Resort spoke with us this afternoon and left no room for doubt. "This refurb is strictly for general maintenance, and to address operational issues on the ride, which will include some improvements to the rides loading system." We then asked if there would be any noticeable alterations that guests will see after the refurb? To our surprise, she said yes. There will be one change. "As guests pass through the mist on Pirates of the Caribbean when it reopens this month, they may see Blackbeard or they may see Davy Jones. You never know which pirate will greet you each time."
If that's not a definitive answer, I don't know what is.
