MARVEL Unleashes The Future Of Digital Comics On WonderCon

Imagine, if you will, that you are sitting next to the man who wrote your two favorite comic books of all time. That was me on Friday March 16th at the MARVEL Comics House Of Ideas panel at WonderCon. I sat less than two feet from Mark Waid, the man who wrote an amazing run on DC Comics Justice Leauge & Kingdom Come.

I was also reading an all new comic that he wrote. The all new NOVA One-shot comic that is a prelude MARVEL's huge Spring cross-over Avengers vs. X-Men. This issue in particular was far more than your average comic book. It was the very first issue of MARVEL's Infinite Comics. An all new approach to digital comics that may actually be the futre of digital publishing.

MARVEL's Infinite Comics is truly a paradigm shift in the approach comic book publishing. Instead of creating a comic book designed purely for the written page and the converted to digital form, Infinite Comics are created on digital devices for digital devices. A truly amazing way to experience comics.

The same classic elements of comics like the word balloons or captions are still there but they flow with the action of the story and become part of it. While characters and elements are animated it isn't overdone or obnoxious. The images are truly HD and almost pop off the screen. Modern comic book art already has a very cinematic feel to it and this is expertly exploited in Infinite Comics. The interface couldn't be easier. You touch the side and the action advances. It's sooooooo cool!

In addition to Waid, the panel included MARVEL Comics Executive Editor and Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort, and Executive Editorial Director for Marvel Digital Media Group and Marvel.com Ryan Penagos. Towards the end, audience members were invited to experience this all new technology that will be available to all on April 4th with the all new upgrade of the MARVEL Comics Digital App. The same day that Avengers Vs. X-Men launches.
